Reedville School District Tobias School Responsible for engineering of the mechanical systems for the new 56,000 square foot elementary school for the Reedville School District. Energy efficient design utilizes a combined domestic and heating hot water system to serve the building with 100 degree hot water. VAV air system utilizes internally generated heat as the primary heating source. The Energy Management System installed is a custom program written by Chris Billings. University of Oregon Lawrence Hall Chris Billings engineered the new HVAC, piping and fire protection system for the remodel of the existing building, a new four-story addition and the conversion of the old boiler building to office space. The new system included 22,000 CFM of energy efficient variable air volume air conditioning. University of Oregon Allied Arts and Architecture Millrace Buildings Chris Billings was responsible for engineering the mechanical systems for new metalsmithing and woodshop buildings, the new photography and painting studio building and remodels of the existing ceramics and arts buildings. Facilities included a 10,000 CFM wood dust collection system and an industrial hood ventilation system with heat recovery. Forest Grove High School This new 235,000 square foot facility was designed for minimum energy consumption. Heating is accomplished with low temperature hot water provided by modular gas-fired boilers in conjunction with a heat pump which recovers heat from interior building areas, shower exhaust and kitchen hood exhaust. An extensive computer simulation of building energy usage was performed as an aid to system design and equipment selection. Portland Community College Terrell Hall Chris Billings was responsible for the engineering of the mechanical and electrical systems for this 21,000 square foot addition built on the Portland Cascade Campus. The building houses lecture halls, classrooms and offices and is conditioned by a 23,400 CFM variable volume HVAC system. Chris Billings also engineered the electrical and plumbing systems. Pomona College Teaching Theater-Claremont, California This new 64,000 square foot two-story structure is a state-of-the-art performing arts teaching facility featuring a 350 seat theater. Chris Billings provided all mechanical engineering services for this structure. The building features an efficient variable air volume HVAC system utilizing a chilled water system and campus steam supply. Acoustic and seismic constraints were of special consideration and were successfully achieved. |

State Office Building - Portland Chris Billings was responsible for mechanical system design to remove two floors from the district steam heating system and accommodate extensive remodeling of a building constructed in the early 1950's. After an initial investigation and evaluation it was determined that new air conditioning equipment and a cooling tower were required. Considerable analysis was performed to determine equipment and piping capacities. As is common with remodel projects, space was limited but the installation was completed allowing ample room for maintenance. United States Coast Guard Air Station - Astoria Responsible for design of heating, ventilating, plumbing and fire protection systems for expansion of air station facility. Facilities included new administration and recreation buildings, an addition to the base medical clinic and remodel work to facilities maintenance and helicopter hangar structures. Heating systems utilized included hot water boiler with radiation, rooftop gas equipment, fan coil air distribution and overhead infrared radiation. Specialized design features include solar-assisted hot water, heat recovery from locker room exhaust and upgrading of existing medical gas piping. Pioneer Courthouse Square - Portland Responsible for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and fountain systems design. A complex design was required to allow for outside air intake, exhaust air discharge and cooling tower discharge without detrimentally affecting the appearance of a generally open brick paved public area. The central water fountain incorporated waterfalls at several elevations, collecting finally in a central pool. A water cascade with spouting heads was designed to enhance the atmosphere of an outdoor restaurant. Mail Tribune Newspaper Office - Medford Responsible for design of mechanical systems including fire protection, heating and air conditioning, plumbing and process and acid waste. A complete energy model was completed to allow the design team to select the most efficient options in insulation, glazing, lighting and HVAC systems. The bids for this project came in well under budget and enabled the owner to expand the scope of work to include work that had been planned for a future phase. U.S. Bank Boiler Project - Portland Responsible as lead consultant for design of the largest boiler plant in downtown Portland serving three city blocks. Two separate buildings totaling approximately 750,000 sq. ft. were converted over from city steam to a site-generated boiler plant utilizing a high pressure modular boiler design totaling 850 boiler horsepower. Chris Billings coordinated the efforts of Architectural, Structural and electrical disciplines on this $1.5 million fast track project. From beginning of design to production of steam, this highly successful project took only three months to complete. It yielded a payback to the Bank of 1.5 years. U.S. Bank Chiller Project - Portland Responsible as lead consultant for design of numerous additions and modifications to the 3,000 ton central chilled water plant. A complete analysis of the existing system assured proper integration of the new equipment with the existing system. U.S. Bancorp Tower, Plaza and Head Office Buildings - Portland Chris Billings was responsible for mechanical tenant improvement on all floors of the 42 story U.S. Bancorp Tower. He also accomplished numerous renovation and tenant office and retail improvement projects in the U.S. Bank Plaza and Head Office buildings. Templeton College Center Main Kitchen Lewis and Clark College Templeton Student Center Remodel included replacing the entire kitchen lineup for the main dormitory kitchen, the student short order kitchen and the bakery. Piping and ventilation were upgraded for the entire facility. Chris Billings worked closely with both the building officials and contractors during construction to avoid the job delays inherent in this remodel situation and bring the project in under budget. Smith Memorial Center Remodel Portland State University Smith Memorial Center Remodel included repiping the entire facility, three full-service kitchens and two servery kitchens. Kitchen hoods were upgraded and the main student short order kitchen received a complete remodel and expansion while maintaining services to students. Tobias Elementary School Kitchen The new Tobias Elementary School in Reedville, for which Chris Billings provided engineering services, houses the main district kitchen serving the entire Reedville School District. Energy efficient design utilizes a combined domestic and heating hot water system to serve the building with 100 degree hot water with a booster to provide 140 degree water to the kitchen. Erb Memorial Union - University of Oregon Responsible for modifications to existing HVAC and plumbing systems as well as new systems design to serve renovated kitchen, performing arts and group meeting facilities. An in-depth analysis of existing mechanical systems capabilities was initially performed to determine the scope and cost budget requirements for the project. As a result of in depth chilled water cooling system performance simulation, it was determined that existing equipment could be re-used at a considerable cost savings to the University.
